Tesla Optimus Enters Mass Production: First Units Roll Off Fremont Line, Musk Says Robots Will Outnumber Humans

Tesla disclosed in its Q3 earnings on October 22 that a mass-production line at its Fremont, California factory has started producing the humanoid robot Optimus, with the first batch of production-standard units rolling off the line. The current manufacturing process is already validated for commercial products.

46 days to retool the line, targeting a million-unit scale. Tesla dismantled and retooled the original Model S/X line at Fremont in just 46 days, with most production equipment already in place. Production is still in its early stage.

The ramp is slow: 20,000 units a week needs about another year. Musk admitted that around ten thousand details still need debugging, and robotic-hand engineering plus rare-earth magnet supply are real constraints. Tesla plans to integrate its AI5 chip into the robot in April 2027 and will not sell to the external market until design and reliability issues are resolved by the end of 2027, starting with industrial scenarios.

Musk also reiterated his prediction: at some point in the future, humanoid robots will outnumber humans, and Optimus could become the biggest product in the world.
