On October 22, Anthropic announced it is donating the AI agent open standard Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation. The transfer covers the standard's name and logo, the GitHub organization, and the agentskills.io domain. This is the second time Anthropic has handed its own standard to a neutral foundation, after the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
What is a Skill? At its core, it is a folder: a SKILL.md file describing a task's goal and steps, optionally bundled with scripts and reference material that agents can load on demand. Rather than re-explaining team procedures in every conversation, a Skill turns "procedural knowledge" into a reusable, shareable digital asset. Anthropic came up with the idea while developing Claude Code, after finding the tool handled general knowledge work well but often lacked the procedural knowledge real business tasks demand.
Adoption has been striking: since the format was published as a cross-platform standard in December 2025, more than 70 agent platforms — including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code — have integrated it; developers have published roughly one million Skills, with installs approaching 280 million.
After the donation, engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and other companies will maintain the standard as individuals, and anyone can use or contribute to it without joining the foundation. Together with the earlier MCP donation (connecting "tools and data"), the neutral governance of Agent Skills (teaching agents "how to get things done") marks the accelerating standardization of the agent ecosystem's infrastructure layer.
