UK unveils £600m AI safety package headlined by a new AI Biosecurity Lab

On 24 October, the UK government unveiled an AI safety package worth around £600 million (about $800 million), centred on a new AI Biosecurity Lab to counter the health and security threats posed by frontier AI.

Key points:

  • A first-of-its-kind AI biosecurity body: the government will put £100 million into a new laboratory, described as the world's first dedicated AI biosecurity organisation, using frontier AI to detect biological threats earlier and speed up vaccines and treatments; a further £65 million goes to countermeasures against pathogens.
  • Top labs on board: OpenAI and Anthropic will provide up to £200 million in model support (in the form of model credits), with Google DeepMind and London life sciences firm Basecamp Research as research partners.
  • Wider package: the AI Security Institute gains an extra £120 million; £130 million goes to cyber defences for critical infrastructure and the wider economy, alongside funding for robotics, autonomous systems, manufacturing and AI research procurement.

The UK's AI minister said the aim is for the lab to become a global institution bringing together world-leading scientific expertise to protect people from emerging biological threats. The backdrop is blunt: as AI accelerates scientific discovery, it may also lower the barriers to harmful activity — this investment is an attempt to build the safety base ahead of the capability curve.
